Arthur Russell's New York—An Instagram Tour by Devonté Hynes

Musical pioneer Arthur Russell was born 64 years ago today. In honor of his birthday, and in anticipation of next week's Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell! concert, Devonté Hynes—who has a wealth of musical knowledge, and will be performing in the show—gave us a virtual tour of some of Russell's old haunts on Instagram, and with it, a true education in all things Arthur Russell. We've included the photos and videos below, along with some to dive even deeper.

My manager @imogene is the coolest person I know. Her dad @justinstrauss1 is a legendary NYC DJ. Who was given this rare Sleeping Bag Records (label Arthur founded) jacket in the 80's. The people that stop her to say "nice jacket" are amazing 👌🏿🗽 - @devhynes #BAMtakeover #RBMANYC #ArthurRussell

84 King Street. That was the address of the Paradise Garage, the legendary nightclub where Arthur would go and see Larry Levan, Walter Gibbons & more play sets deep into the morning. 437 E.12th street. Allen Ginsberg owned three apartments in this building, many people passed through here also known as "Poets Building" from Richard Hell to William Burroughs to... Arthur Russell, who resided here (on the fourth floor?!) thanks to Allen for a couple of years. The Kitchen From Wikipedia - "The Kitchen is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary art and performance space located at 512 West 19th Street, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It was founded in Greenwich Village in 1971 by Steina and Woody Vasulka, taking its name from the original location, the kitchen of the Mercer Arts Center." Some of my favorite artists have performed here from Philip Glass to the Beastie Boys (as a punk band!) to Laurel Halo last year. Okay one last post!! Here's a lost gem for you to look up. The late composer Elodie Lauten made an opera in the 80's titled "The Death Of Don Juan". Arthur Russell contributed cello and vocals to the performance & recording.
